How the Overall Band Score Is Calculated
The overall IELTS band score is the arithmetic mean of your four individual module scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), rounded to the nearest half or whole band. If the average ends in .25, it rounds up to the next half band (e.g., 6.25 → 6.5). If the average ends in .75, it rounds up to the next whole band (e.g., 6.75 → 7.0).
How to Use This Calculator
Choose your preferred mode: Raw Scores → Band if you have practice test scores (number of correct answers out of 40 for Listening and Reading), or Band Scores Only if you already know your band scores. Enter scores for all four modules. Your overall band score appears instantly, calculated using the official IELTS rounding rules. The conversion tables below the calculator show exactly how raw scores map to bands for Listening and both Academic and General Training Reading.
IELTS Score Converter & Band Score Chart
This tool also works as an IELTS band score converter: in Raw Scores → Band mode it converts your number of correct answers into a band using the official raw-to-band tables, so you can check a Listening or Reading score on its own. For a side-by-side view of every level across all four modules, see the full IELTS band score chart. You can also dig into module-specific scoring in our Listening and Speaking band score guides.
How IELTS Scores Are Calculated
IELTS uses a 9-band scoring system where each module is scored independently, and then the four module scores are averaged to produce the overall band. Listening and Reading have 40 questions each, and raw scores (correct answers) are converted to bands using standardized conversion tables. Writing and Speaking are assessed directly on band descriptors covering specific criteria for each level. The overall band is the average of all four modules, rounded to the nearest half or whole band using standard mathematical rounding at the .25 and .75 thresholds.
For detailed information about what each band means, see our IELTS Band Score Guide which includes full band descriptors, university acceptance ranges, and PTE/TOEFL comparisons.
Worked Example: How to Calculate Your Overall Band
The overall band is simply the average of your four module scores, rounded with the official IELTS rule. Here are two examples:
Example 1 — rounds to 6.5
- Listening: 6.5
- Reading: 6.0
- Writing: 6.0
- Speaking: 7.0
(6.5 + 6.0 + 6.0 + 7.0) ÷ 4 = 6.375 → rounds up to 6.5 (because .375 falls between .25 and .75).
Example 2 — rounds to 7.0
- Listening: 7.0
- Reading: 6.5
- Writing: 6.5
- Speaking: 7.0
(7.0 + 6.5 + 6.5 + 7.0) ÷ 4 = 6.75 → rounds up to 7.0 (a .75 average rounds up to the next whole band).
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the overall IELTS band score calculated?
The overall IELTS band score is the arithmetic mean of your four individual module scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), rounded to the nearest half or whole band. If the average ends in .25, it rounds up to .5. If it ends in .75, it rounds up to the next whole band. Use the calculator above to test different score combinations.
How accurate is this IELTS band score calculator?
This calculator uses the official IELTS rounding rules and raw score conversion tables published by Cambridge Assessment English, British Council, and IDP. The results match how your official IELTS score is calculated. Note that raw score conversions can vary slightly between test versions to account for difficulty differences.
What raw score do I need for a band 7 in Listening?
You typically need 30 out of 40 correct answers in IELTS Listening to achieve band 7. Use the conversion tables shown in the calculator to see exact raw-to-band mappings for Listening, Academic Reading, and General Training Reading.
What raw score do I need for a band 7 in Reading?
In IELTS Academic Reading you need about 30 out of 40 correct answers for band 7. General Training Reading requires a higher 34 out of 40 for band 7, because the texts are easier. Switch the Reading type in the calculator above to see the full conversion table for each.
Is 6.5 a good IELTS band score?
Yes — band 6.5 is a solid 'competent to good' result and is accepted by a large number of universities and immigration programs. Many undergraduate courses ask for an overall 6.0–6.5, while postgraduate courses and some visas require 6.5–7.0. Always check the exact requirement for your specific university, course, or visa.
What IELTS score do I need for university or a UK visa?
Most universities require an overall band between 6.0 and 7.5 depending on the course and country, often with a minimum in each module. For a UK Skilled Worker or family visa you generally need at least CEFR level B1 (around band 4.0 in each skill), while degree-level UKVI study needs B2 (around 5.5–6.0). Confirm the current requirement with the institution or official government source before booking your test.
How is the overall band rounded?
Average the four module scores, then round to the nearest half or whole band. If the average ends in .25 it rounds up to the next .5, and if it ends in .75 it rounds up to the next whole band. For example, an average of 6.25 becomes 6.5, and 6.75 becomes 7.0.
