Feeling shy when speaking English is very common. It usually comes from fear of making mistakes or being judged. The truth is, most people are not judging you they’re just trying to understand you.
A good way to reduce shyness is to start in a safe space. Talk to yourself first. Describe what you’re doing, your plans, or your thoughts in English. It may feel strange at the beginning, but it builds confidence without pressure.
Then move to low-pressure practice. You can record your voice and listen back. This helps you get used to hearing yourself speak English. After that, try chatting with one person instead of a group. One-to-one conversations feel much easier.
Don’t aim for perfect English. Aim for communication. Even simple sentences are enough. The more you focus on being perfect, the more your mind blocks you.
It also helps to prepare small sentences before speaking. For example, if you know you’ll introduce yourself, practice it a few times. This reduces anxiety in real situations.
You can also practice with apps like HelloTalk or Tandem where people are learning just like you. Everyone there understands mistakes, so it feels safer.
One more important thing accept that mistakes are part of the process. Every fluent speaker you see today made many mistakes before. Speaking is like a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it gets.
Start small, speak a little every day, and you’ll notice your confidence growing without forcing it.
