We use “there is” and “there are” to talk about things that exist or are in a place.
The difference is very simple:
We use “there is” for one thing (singular) or uncountable things
There is a book on the table
There is a cat in the room
There is water in the bottle
We use “there are” for more than one thing (plural)
There are two books on the table
There are many students in the class
There are apples in the basket
Easy way to remember
One thing → there is
More than one → there are
Quick tip
Even if it sounds natural in your language, always check if the noun is singular or plural in English before choosing.
